What’s the best waterproof fabric? Many outdoor enthusiasts would argue that Gore-Tex Pro, by far the most widely known option out there, offers the most complete package. But what about the other options – the likes of Polartec NeoShell and the new kid on the block from The North Face, FutureLight? Our team have been testing all of these (and more) over the last few months and comparing their performance against each other. There’ve been plenty of trips to the Alps, to Scotland, Norway and even the Canadian Rockies, with activities ranging from hiking and trail running to climbing and ski mountaineering. Other membranes we’ve tested include Pertex Shield, Outdoor Research’s AscentShell, Patagonia H2No, Fjallraven’s EcoShell and eVent. How to wash Bergans shell products 1. Check the garments care label 2. Remove stains before washing 3. Close all zippers 4. Loosen drawstrings and elastics 5. Close all buttons 6. Turn the garment inside out 8. Use detergent for coloured fabrics; use a sufficent amount for half a machine load. No fabric softener. 9. Fill only 1/2 the washing machine with clothes 10. Select a washing program that corresponds to the instructions on the garment 11. Do not wring wet garments 12. Turn the garment the right way again 13. Hang to dry 14. Re-impregnate the outer fabric to ensure that the garment surface repels water more quickly and that it maintains its good breathability
