The Minoans and the Mycenaeans were both powerful civilizations of the Bronze Age Aegean, and often they are through to follow one after the other. However, this comparison video will detail through some of the similarities and differences between the Minoans and Mycenaeans, and the transmission of culture, practices and art which occurred between the two groups. The Palace of Knossos is the most famous of the Minoan palatial centres, with its iconic bull leaping fresco and labyrinthine architecture layout. The prominence of the bull at Knossos links it to the mythological story of Theseus, King Minos, Ariadne and the Minotaur. The palatial centres of Mycenaean Greece are smaller than those on Crete, and we know more about how the centres functioned due to the Linear B archives, with the greatest number being found on Pylos. The Mycenaeans had fortifications so large around most of the centres which were called 'Cyclopean', with the most outstanding being at Mycenae and Tiryns. However, they are not found at the site of the Palace of Nestor at Pylos. The grand centres of the Minoans did not have any type of fortifications, potentially due to different threats. The Minoans and Mycenaeans shared facets of their cultures with each other, however due to the Minoans being present on Crete earlier than the Mycenaeans on mainland Greece, the Minoans had a greater influence on the Mycenaeans, rather than the other way around. Ever since the early 20th century, the Minoans have been a subject of interest thanks to the discoveries and excavations by Sir Arthur Evans, a British archaeologist who found the first Minoan ruins and named them after the mythological King Minos and his Minotaur. Evans was able to gain almost sole access to the lands of the Cretan government for excavation by paying for it with funds generated by his supporters in 1900. He and his crew unearthed the massive palace complex of Knossos, one of the most famous archaeological excavation sites in history. Often remembered as Europe’s first major civilization, the enigmatic Minoans made their presence well known, expanding their influence from mainland Greece, known in the Bronze Age as Mycenae, to as far as Egypt to the south and east as Asia Minor, known today as Turkey. With a long history dating back as far as their beginnings in 3500 BCE, to their very gradual dissipation starting in 1500 BCE, these formerly prolific, yet currently mysterious people have still left their mark on the Mediterranean world and were forgotten for quite some time after their fall. It represents the first advanced civilization in Europe, leaving behind massive building complexes, tools, artwork, writing systems, and a massive network of trade. The civilization was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. The name "Minoan" derives from the mythical King Minos and was coined by Evans, who identified the site at Knossos with the labyrinth and the Minotaur. In this video I host Dr. Peter Revesz on an absolutely fascinating subject and that is the origins of the ancient Minoans. The Minoan civilization flourished in the Middle Bronze Age on the island of Crete located in the eastern Mediterranean from c. 2000 BCE until c. 1500 BCE. With their unique art and architecture, and the spread of their ideas through contact with other cultures across the Aegean, the Minoans made a significant contribution to the development of Western European civilization as it is known today. In this episode we go back to a time before civilization. A time of mass migration. This episode sets out to explore the Minoan Origins from different viewpoints. Firstly, we explore traditional narratives and especially what they got wrong. And then we approach Ancient DNA, Art motifs, Vowel harmony, Script similarity, Etymology and finally Translations. Has Dr. Revesz deciphered Linear A Script and how has his work been accepted? As we conclude Dr. Revesz believes his data analysis lead to the conclusion that we need to separate the Minoans into two groups: the Early Minoans and the Middle Minoans.(The Late Minoans could be a third group, but there is no archaeogenetic data about them.) Earlier studies have not separated these groups, which have different origins. The Early Minoans came from Anatolia, while the Middle Minoans came from the Danube Basin. The Phaistos Disc is a fascinating artefact from the Minoan Civilisation of Ancient Crete. This clay tablet, which was discovered at the Phaistos palace archaeological site in Crete at the beginning of the 20th century, is stamped with an undeciphered script. Around 1500 BC, the great Minoan civilization thrived on the islands of Crete and Santorin in the eastern Mediterranean. A guided tour of the legendary sites at Akrotiri, Phasestus, Ayía Triáda and Knosses culminates in a visit to the palace of Minos, famous for its mythical labyrinth. Minoans were traders, and their cultural contacts reached far beyond the island of Crete — to Egypt's Old Kingdom, to copper-bearing Cyprus, Canaan, and the Levantine coasts beyond, and to Anatolia. In late 2009, Minoan-style frescoes and other Minoan-style artifacts were discovered during excavations of the Canaanite palace at Tel Kabri, Israel, leading archaeologists to conclude that the Minoan influence was the strongest foreign influence on that Caananite city state. These are the only Minoan remains ever found in Israel. Minoan techniques and styles in ceramics also provided models, of fluctuating influence, for Helladic Greece. Along with the familiar example of Thera, Minoan "colonies" can be found first at Kastri on Cythera, an island close to the Greek mainland that came under Minoan influence in the mid-third millennium (EMII) and remained Minoan in culture for a thousand years, until Mycenaean occupation in the 13th century. The use of the term "colony", however, like "thalassocracy", has been criticized in recent years. The Minoan strata there replace a mainland-derived culture in the Early Bronze Age, the earliest Minoan settlement outside Crete. The Cyclades were in the Minoan cultural orbit, and, closer to Crete, the islands of Karpathos, Saria and Kasos, also contained Minoan colonies, or settlements of Minoan traders, from the Middle Bronze Age (MMI-II). Most of them were abandoned in LMI, but Minoan Karpathos recovered and continued with a Minoan culture until the end of the Bronze Age. Other supposed Minoan colonies, such as that hypothesised by Adolf Furtwängler for Aegina, were later dismissed by scholars. There was a Minoan colony at Ialysos on Rhodes. Minoan cultural influence indicates an orbit that extended not only throughout the Cyclades (so-called Minoanisation), but in locations such as Egypt and Cyprus. Paintings from the 15th century BC in Thebes, Egypt depict a number of individuals, who are Minoan in appearance, bearing gifts. Inscriptions record these people as coming from Keftiu, or the "islands in the midst of the sea", and may refer to gift-bringing merchants or officials from Crete. Certain locations within Crete emphasize it as an "outward looking" society. The Neopalatial site of Kato Zakros, for instance, is located within 100 metres of the modern shore-line, situated within a bay. Its large number of workshops and the richness of its site materials indicate a potential 'entrepôt' for import and export. Such activities are elaborated in artistic representations of the sea, including the 'Flotilla' fresco from room 5, in the west house at Akrotiri.

The precise date of the Minoan eruption has been fiercely debated for decades by archaeologists and geologists, and while most academics place the event around 1600 BCE, the Minoan eruption at Thera is thought to be in a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale, which decimated the Minoan settlement at Akrotira, as well as communities and agricultural areas on nearby islands and the northern coast of Crete. Thought to be four times the strength of the well-documented 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, the Minoan eruption at present day Santorini is widely believed to be one of the largest volcanic events in human history. Although there are no clear records of the eruption, its plume may have been described in the Egyptian Tempest Stele, while the ensuing volcanic winter coincides with a cold snap described in the Chinese Bamboo Annals. Adding to the historic magnitude of the eruption, geologist Barbara J. Sivertsen has further sought to establish a link between the Minoan eruption and the biblical Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Geological evidence shows that the Thera volcano erupted numerous times over several hundred thousand years before the catastrophic Minoan eruption of 1600 BCE. In a recurring process, the volcano would erupt violently before collapsing into a roughly circular seawater-filled caldera, with numerous small islands forming in a circle around the primary vent. The caldera would slowly refill with magma, building up a new dome until the next eruption started the cycle over again. When the main volcanic eruption finally occurred, it hurled ash and magma 20 miles high into the stratosphere, at the same time creating a tsunami with an estimated wave height of 115 to 492 feet, which decimated the northern coastline of crete. The dramatic western coastline of Santorini was created when the island split in two during the primary blast. Greek folklore has perpetuated the story that the Minoans living on Thera departed the island in a flotilla of oceangoing vessels when the frequency of earthquakes began to intensify, making their way to nearby Crete before celebrating their salvation by the time the main eruption finally occurred. Sadly, however, none of the celebrants possessed knowledge of the association of earthquakes and tsunamis, and when the wave crashed ashore on the northern coast of Crete, all the survivors were drowned in a watery death, before their bodies were washed out to sea. And there you have it, the Minoan eruption of Thera, today on The Daily Dose. I forgot to mentionthe breasts of the woman behind the bull on the famous bull leaping fresco from Knossos, were possibly better defined than what is shown today. Again, that portion of her body is missing, but I surmise wouldn't have had a straight line down to her waste as seen; it may have shown the under curve of her breasts. Or so I'd assumebut just my own 2 cents on that. :) On the Tell al-Daba fresco, I forgot to mention the curious depiction of individuals with three different skin tons: red (male), white (female), yellow'ish (??). It's assumed the latter skin tone applies to males, but perhaps it was Egyptians participating in the event as well?
