John Singer Sargent was the most successful society portrait painter of the Belle Epoque, and having one’s portrait painted by him was seen as an indication of impeccable good taste. In this episode, I look at two paintings created by Sargent. Two paintings united by scandal. One of them is of Doctor Pozzi, a celebrity gynaecologist and infamous ladies' man, who was referred to by many of his clients as L’Amour médecin, or Doctor Love. The other is Madame X, or Virginie Gautreau, who, like Dr. Pozzi, had a colourful love life, and is also shown in a provocative pose. The paintings have been written about and discussed as separate works of art, but instead of looking at them as two separate paintings - maybe it’s time we talked about them as a pair? Gustave Flaubert’s debut novel, Madame Bovary, published in 1856, landed the French author in court on charges of obscenity. He won the case but the publicity made the novel a best-selling sensation. It took Flaubert 5 years to write Madame Bovary, and today it’s considered one of the best novels in the French language. Dozens of films and TV dramas are based on this story and almost everyone has heard of it. So in this video, I will summarise Madame Bovary, tell you about its major themes and a few points of analysis, and answer the question, how fiction impacts reality. I will also show you the genius of Flaubert’s precise language and beautiful description by giving some example passages from the novel. I used my technology (cinema 4d and after effects) and photoshop skills to show how I think she might have looked. Of course all the renderings are just my own opinion. I know how difficult it can be to connect with text book renderings and bland biographies. Hey everyone, Welcome to another installment of Harry potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing Hogwarts flying instructor and quidditch referee Rolanda Hooch. Hooch is a british witch who is speculated to have been born sometime before the year 1918. Not too much is known about her, and she doesn’t appear in the books or films very much, HOWEVER, she is a very important character as she is the one responsible for teaching the students their foundational knowledge of flying broomsticks. The ability to fly a broom is a necessary skill for any witch or wizard- and Hooch is an expert. In fact, Hooch is so good that she was chosen as the Hogwart’s Quidditch referee by the Department of Magical Games and Sports. Being selected for that role is nothing to scoff at, and it’s been expressed that before you start the position you need to undergo a series of complicated and rigorous tests- both written and physical. Madam Hooch is known for her candid nature: "Flying is not unlike walking. It's just much more difficult, and far more dangerous." and for her lack of patience with regards to rule breaking: "None of you is to move while I take this boy to the hospital wing! You leave those brooms where they are or you'll be out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch.'" But one thing about Hooch that I happened to pick up on, beyond all of that, is the fact that she has piercing yellow eyes. "Their teacher, Madam Hooch, arrived. She had short, grey hair and yellow eyes” Now, yellow eyes are not something that we see every day - in the muggle world, sometimes the whites of peoples eyes go yellow- and that’s called jaundice. But..yellow pupils? That’s something else altogether, and that’s what Hooch has. The actress obviously doesn’t have yellow eyes, but her character clearly does-so, that was a conscious decision, so what’s the deal? Why does Madam Hooch have YELLOW eyes? It turns out it’s not actually explained anywhere, so I’m going to give you guys a couple of theories. Madam Hooch is a flying instructor and a quidditch referee- this means that a large part of her life revolves around flying. It also means that it’s extremely necessary for her to have good eyesight, as quidditch is a fast-paced airborne game with A LOT going on. It’s hard enough for refs to see things going on in regular muggle sports, so I can’t imagine trying to ref quidditch. For her to be able to ref a game like quidditch, her eyesight must be impeccable- FAR better than a regular witch or wizard. So- why are her eyes so good? She’s just a regular witch, right? My first theory is that, based out of necessity, Madam Hooch created some sort of concoction or spell that allows her to have ‘hawk’ like vision. Hawks are medium-sized birds of prey KNOWN for their vision. They have four types of colour receptors in the eye- and this allows them to perceive not only the visible range of light, but also ultraviolet light. As hawk’s are natural hunters of small animals, it makes sense that they would have evolved to have such a keen sense of vision. Hawk-eyed is even an adjective, that means ‘vigilant; having extremely keen sight’. And what else do Hawks have? Yellow eyes. So, my first theory is that Hooch, who recognized that she needed good eyesight to excel in her profession, created some sort of potion or spell to turn her eyes in to that of a hawk. My next theory, which bears less weight, involves Hooch being a Metamorphmagus. Metamorphmagi are witches and wizards who are able to change their appearance at will. Metamorphmagi are SIMILAR to animagi, but differ in this way: Animagi transform their entire appearance, and Metamorphmagi possess the ability to hone in on specific parts of their body- changing only those things. Becoming an Animagus is also a learned skill, whereas Metamorphmagi are born with their ability. One known Metamorphmagi in Harry Potter is Tonks, and we even see her changing specific aspects of her appearance in the film. Tonks has no connection to pigs whatsoever, but is seen easily turning her nose in to the snout of a pig, so- why wouldn’t Hooch be able to turn her eyes in to literal hawk eyes? Hello and welcome! So this is a character that I came up with about two years ago. I even started a small channel featuring only her, but I couldn’t maintain it for several reasons. One reason being that I was concerned that having a channel featuring new illustrated books may give rise to copyright issues. I also wanted to do more with ASMR. But Madam is just too much fun to abandon completely! So I thought I’d let her make guest appearances here. She’s a Mysterious lady who lives in an old, country manor. Being all alone in the large house, she has converted part of it into an inn; renting rooms to travelers passing through the charming town not far from where she lives. She is an eccentric person, strange to some, but she is kind hearted. She has a vast library of many different books, which she reads to her guests in her library before they settle in for the night. Anyway, tomorrow’s video will be my normal content, but The Mysterious Madam will be a semi regular guest here. Who knows? I may even come up with other characters who live in the town and surrounding areas! We’ll see about that later, though. How you enjoy!
