Amp in a box pedals are very popular options for guitar players looking to capture the tone of a specific amp on their pedalboard. It seems almost every pedal builder makes some kind of preamp, or amp in a box circuit these days but how do they stack up against a real amp? Welcome to That Pedal Show! Please subscribe to our channel and visit our store 🤍 In this episode Daniel and Mick compare five OD/distortion pedals all inspired by the fabled Marshall ‘Plexi’ sound. The pedal sounds and discussion begin at 08:49, so if you want to avoid all the preamble, go straight there. The term ‘Plexi’ commonly refers to Marshall amps made from the mid 1960s to the early 1970s; non-master volume heads that featured a gold Plexiglas control panel. They include certain JTM45s (including ‘Bluesbreaker' combos) and of course the now legendary 50- and 100-watt Super Lead, Super bass and Major models. It’s a huge range of tonal ground when you consider that those amps lie at the heart of tones from Eric Clapton (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Cream), Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Paul Kossoff, Edward Van Halen and many more, not to mention more recent stars including Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson. How close can these pedals hope to get in evoking those all-time classic tones? I always have fun with these "amp vs pedal/ can you tell the difference" type of videos. In this one I try to get our new mini-plexidrive to sound like my favorite Plexi-based amp. Notes: Yes, the Shaw amp not a Marshall amp. I had Kevin Shaw build me this one specifically, and it's based off the legendary Plexi circuit. 🤍 to check out more products from Shaw. I have several of his amps and love them! The new Plexidrive mini will be available in a few days. Or, it may already be out depending on when you're watching this. I love questions and thoughts in the comment section. Trolling comments (but not disagreement comments) are simply deleted or blocked from page.

Our wonderful viewers asked us some stuff after the last Marshall video… so let’s do this! Welcome to the show! A few weeks back we made a video comparing two classic ‘small-box’ Marshalls, the JTM45 and 1987x. Following that video we had a bunch of common questions and themes crop up in the comments… that we’re addressing in this video. You can enjoy… 0:00 Intro playing 0:47 What are we doing today? 1:32 Try a Y-Cable To Both Channels 8:50 What About The Low Inputs? 12:00 Jump The Channels The Other Way? 14:18 Crank The High Treble Only 26:28 Try A Treble Booster 31:10 Wet-Dry With The JTM45 Q: You uploaded this video once already – what gives? A: Yes, this is a re-upload. We had an issue with a caption which was causing some confusion. So we deleted the captions - everything else is exactly the same as it was. We had some extraneous noise, some of which made it to the recorded audio, some of which didn't. C'est la vie! Enjoy the show! Best Clean Tone? Fender Super Reverb Vs Cranked Marshall Plexi – That Pedal Show

00:26:48
04.02.2021

Can this Marshall rock monster be tamed to a sweet clean tone? You bet it can! Life too short for long YouTube videos? See the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome to the show! I’ve been thinking about this for ages. It seems like a crazy question at first glance, right? But after welcoming Aynsley Lister to the show recently – 🤍 – and watching Dan’s awesome chat with Simon Jarratt – 🤍 – I thought now was a good time to explore this. Or at least to start re-exploring it. Disclaimer! This video IS NOT about the Ultimate Clean Guitar Tone Ever (even if you could define it). In fact some of the sounds in this video are borderline ugly. Indeed, if you want a really ‘clean’ clean guitar sound – no harmonic overdrive or distortion at all – neither of these amps is going to do that. At all. Moreover, what I’m doing here is taking one bastion of archetypal accepted ‘clean’ tone in the form of a mid-sixties-style blackface Fender amp, and asking if its more aggressive, shouty British brother can tame that rock roar back to a sweet clean tone. Well I’ll let you into a secret. We already know it can, evidenced by many top players down the years. What’s more interesting to me is to ask: what are the dynamic and feel characteristics of achieving a ‘clean’ tone in this way; what else does that offer us as guitar players, aside from the tone itself? If you can possibly refrain, try not to comment “Doh, I’ve been telling you this for years” or anything similarly smug. Remember that not everyone is at the same point in their guitar journey. Sure there’s nothing universally new here, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be new or interesting to some people who’ve yet to experience it. Q: Why are there just as many overdrive sounds in this video as ‘clean’ sounds? A: Because we’re talking about the context of dialling back from an overdrive sound and/or having more dynamics expression available from the guitar. Q: Capacitance, cables and all that? A: The tech-savvy among you will know that the loss of brightness from guitar to amp has a lot to do with capacitance, impedance and mitigating that with the buffer. Not all buffers are equal and not all cables are equal. So for the record, my cables are a 15-foot Klotz LaGrange from guitar to the QMX and a 20-foot Evidence Forte cable from QMX to amp. Both are relatively low-capacitance cables. The QMX switcher is not buffered in any way and is audibly transparent. The Strat has original 1961 pickups and original wiring – 250k pots and 0.1 cap. The Les Paul has Gibson Custom Buckers with 500k pots, 0.022 caps and ’50s wiring. Q: Why can I hear loads of hiss and hum from the Marshall when you speak but much less when you play? And none from the Fender? A: Because the voice microphone is gained way louder than the amp/cab and room mics. My voice would register between 50 and 60dB, ish, on our dB meter. Board Talk: VINTAGE Marshall in a Box!

Okay, we've heard it all before... 'this' in a box, 'that' in a box... surely, it can't be that simple? Just buy *this* pedal and your existing setup will be transformed in to a fire-breathing behemoth? Well, perhaps! But not entirely... The concept of 'Marshall in a Box' pedals is no longer that new. Many highly-regarded pedal designers have taken their stab at capturing the raw ferocity and excitement of a cranked Marshall amp stack, in a humble stompbox format, and usually they take focus on the higher gain, '80s tones, that feel like butter under the fingers to get utterly shred-tastic on! However, some of the greatest guitar tones of all time have erupted from the most classic, vintage-style Marshall amps of the '60s and early '70s - where are all the pedals that capture THAT magic, you may ask? Well, look no further... In today's video, Jack rounds up 6 of his favourite MIAB pedals that have their roots in the more old-school approach. Some wear their intentions and origins on their sleeves, others take a little bit of prying, but the results here are some of the very best, richest, most dynamic and timeless Marshall tones... in a much smaller box! Figure out how you can incorporate one of these stomps in to your existing rig, and get a flavour of the ear-splitting, stadium-crushing tones for yourself! Nux Plexi Crunch Review. In this video, I review the brand new NuX Plexi Crunch Pedal from the Reissue Series. This is a High Gain pedal that emulates the sought after Marshall Plexi amp. In order to offer an objective review, I used a Hotone Britwind amp which includes a VOX AC Amp and Marshall Plexi. This is a really great sounding pedal, especially with a little reverb and tweaking the guitar volume. Tone City Golden Plexi 2 | The best cheap Marshall In A Box mini pedal got an upgrade! Review & Demo

This is the Tone City Golden Plexi 2 – a second (and improved!) edition of the bestselling, and quite possibly the best, mega affordable Marshall In A Box mini pedal out there! Get the Golden Plexi 2 here: 🤍 At under $50/€50, the original Golden Plexi took the pedal world by storm when it first came out a few years ago as one of the original batch of Tone City pedals. It basically turned any clean amp into a snarling Marshall-esque beast – exactly what an MIAB pedal is supposed to do, in fact – and loads of guitar players I knew bought them. At the price, they were an absolute no-brainer. So imagine my surprise when I was looking to pick one up recently for a Plexi pedal shootout I’m planning, and found that Tone City have quietly – and without any fanfare whatsoever – released a second edition of the pedal! And, what’s more, they’ve made it better too, by reducing the noise floor and making the gain knob more tweakable and usable as well. (They told me this when I emailed them asking about the differences.) After that, I couldn’t wait to get the Golden Plexi 2 plugged in and making some tones. In this video, I use my Fender Telecaster and my Epiphone Les Paul to test the pedal in as many settings as I can, from a dirty boost to light crunch, medium drive and all-out distortion, and in all my favorite music styles – indie, classic rock, punk, alternative rock, metal, and more. I also try the Golden Plexi 2 into a dirty amp, and at the end I do a loop on each guitar where I tweak the pedal’s knobs to show you all the extremes you can get with it. Here are some links to the various playing samples and info bits: 00:00 Hello! 00:26 Introduction to the Golden Plexi 2 02:07 I found this pedal totally by chance 02:40 Upgrades in the Golden Plexi 2 03:15 Controls 03:23 Today’s rig and plan 04:06 Clean reference tones and turning on the Golden Plexi 2 Pushed Clean sounds 04:46 Surf pop chords 05:21 Blues progression 05:45 Open indie pop chords 06:12 Ascending droning indie riff Classic Rock Sounds 06:39 AC/DC inspired classic rock riff 07:09 Airbourne inspired classic rock riff 07:31 Classic rock riff 07:49 Groovy classic rock rhythm tone 08:15 Hendrix inspired classic rock riff 08:48 Funky classic rock riff Indie Rock Sounds 09:06 Indie rock octave chords riff 09:30 Edgy indie barre chords 09:59 Upbeat indie rock barre chords 10:23 Kings Of Leon inspired indie rock riff 10:53 Indie rock rhythm sound 11:22 Indie octave chords riff Higher Gain Overdrive Sounds 11:50 Classic hard rock riff 12:26 Airbourne inspired hard rock riff 13:10 Glam rock riff 13:36 Glam metal rhythm sound 13:56 Pop punk riff 14:23 Pop punk melodic lead sound 14:39 Green Day inspired punk rock riff 15:06 Punk rock power chords 15:33 Progressive rock riff (Drop D tuning) 16:05 Chunky modern rock power chords (Drop D) 16:29 Rage Against The Machine inspired groovy rock riff (Drop D) Heavy Sounds (All in Drop D tuning) 17:01 Hardcore chugging riff 17:32 Mastodon inspired modern metal riff with country twang 17:57 Hardcore punk riff 18:28 Rammstein inspired industrial metal riff 18:41 Classic heavy metal/sludge riff (all controls dimed) 19:15 Golden Plexi 2 as boost into a dirty amp 20:00 Fender Telecaster indie rock loop 22:02 Epiphone Les Paul classic rock loop 24:06 My thoughts – it does that Marshall In A Box thing! 24:42 What I like about the Golden Plexi 2: tones and versatility 25:47 Price, size, build quality 26:43 What I don’t like so much 27:11 My conclusion on the Golden Plexi 2 27:56 Plexi pedal shootout coming and goodbye My setup was as follows: I ran the Golden Plexi 2 straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. Dagan checks out the small but mighty Wampler Plexi Drive Mini! Have you ever wondered how to get that iconic cranked Marshall amp tone, but don't have a Marshall?! Are you on the hunt for a new, overdrive pedal with the kind of tones normally only found on classic 60s and 70s British-made amplifiers? Then we have just the thing for you! With the Wampler Plexi Drive Mini you get that classic, vintage British amp-style overdrive circuit that the original Wampler Plexi Drive is renowned for, but now in a much more compact, pedalboard-friendly enclosure. They've even included some improvements over the original design, for good measure! Wampler have worked closely with some leading pedal demo artists to tweak the circuitry of this pedal to deliver the kind of tones and features we all love. For starters, the Wampler Plexi Mini sports a Bass Boost switch, which will offer an increased bass response similar to what you'd get when switching from a 2 x 12 Cab up to a 4 x 12. In addition to this, there's also a Mid Boost - a new feature for Wampler Plexi pedals - which delivers a warm, throaty, tube-like boost to your sound. Plexi Pedal Shootout (cheap to expensive) | Bogner vs Tone City vs Carl Martin vs NUX vs Ramble FX

19.01.2023

Today we’re taking a look at five different Plexi pedals! And with stompboxes from five different makers and at five different budget levels, there’s certainly going to be one to suit everybody here. These are the pedals we’re comparing: Bogner La Grange: 🤍 Tone City Golden Plexi 2: 🤍 Carl Martin Plexi Ranger: 🤍 NUX Plexi Crunch: 🤍 Ramble FX Marvel Drive 3: 🤍 I’ve had the Bogner for years, sold on it instantly after watching Pete Thorn’s amazing video demo. And for a long time, that was the only MIAB – Marshall In A Box – pedal I ever needed. But recently, I got to try the affordable offerings from NUX and Tone City, and these excellent budget pedals really got me into exploring more Plexi possibilities. So today, we’re trying out five together, and hopefully it’ll help you decide which one you prefer. The Bogner is a true all-rounder, with loads of features and great Plexi tones from pushed cleans all the way up to full-on high-gain brutality. The NUX and the Tone City are rawer, and both get pretty filthy when you turn them up. The Carl Martin Plexi Ranger is a double pedal, like the La Grange, but it has an awesome treble booster side alongside a pretty raucous Plexi drive, and the exquisite Ramble FX Marvel 3 is boutique in every way, shape and form. In the video, I run the five pedals through a classic rock loop played on the bridge humbucking pickup of my Epiphone Les Paul. The pedals are running into my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic on the clean channel, with no reverb. Which one do you think sounds best? Here are some links to the different parts of the video: 00:00 Introduction and what we’re doing today 01:09 La Grange info 03:04 Plexi Crunch info 03:52 Golden Plexi 2 info 04:31 Plexi Ranger info 05:14 Marvel 3 info 06:05 Today’s rig and plan 06:43 The loop 22:21 ALL 5 PEDALS STACKED TOGETHER 22:51 My thoughts 23:29 Why the La Grange? 24:34 Why the Plexi Crunch? 25:15 Why the Golden Plexi 2? 26:11 Why the Plexi Ranger? 26:56 Why the Marvel 3? 27:48 My conclusions 28:56 Thanks and goodbye My setup was as follows: I ran the five pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loop. Marshall Pedal (MIAB) Shootout!

#miab #marshall #pedal I've always dreamt of owning a Marshall, like a PROPER Marshall. You know, a JTM-45, a Plexi, a JCM 800....hell a JCM 900 would be awesome. But for the money, there's just more usable stuff around for what I do. SO, like most mortals, I lean on pedals to get my Marshall satisfaction. Marshall In A Box (or MIAB) are everywhere. They are taking over. So I got a load and played them off against each other. These aren't all modelled on the same amp, some are hi gain, some aren't, but they are all hitting for a Marshall tone. I chuck in a couple of the Line 6 Helix Marshall settings as well for comparison! The Pedals: 1. Wampler Plexi Drive (probably the most used JTM-45 pedal going) 2. ZVEX Distortron (another 45 in a box, great on its own, struggled in a mix) 3. Weehbo JMP Drive (difficult to dial in, really worth it when I did) 4. Alexander Jubilee (fantastic pedal modelled on a fantastic amp) 5. Marshall Jackhammer (BARGAIN Marshall pedal, NAILS rhythm tones) 6. Wampler Pinnacle (Brown sound goodness, fantastic at full volumes) 7. Amptweaker Tight Rock (very polished, a pedal for the pros) 8. Carl Martin Panama (buzzy mess in the room, sounds incredible recorded) 9. Carl Martin Plexi Tone (adored pedal, quite rightly!) 10. J Rad .45 (AC DC in a box, great pedal) 11. Thorpy FX Gunshot (Versatlie mean machine, great in an AC15) 12. Line 6 Helix boosted JTM 45 13. Two iconic Marshalls - which one would you choose? Welcome to the show! A very simple proposition today - take two classic Marshalls, give ‘em a hammering and see what’s what. Both amps are modern reissues: a 2245 JTM45 and a 1987x ‘Plexi’. They are both non-master volume amps that you will hear through the same cabinet. No attenuators, no direct sounds, no cab modelling, no post EQ or plugins – just the amps, speakers and microphones. Big thanks to our mate Jake Loosemore for selling us the JTM45! Questions arising… How are you switching the amps? With a Radial Headbone VT, remote switched via TheGigRig G3 - links below What is the speaker cabinet? A Marshall 1960AX 412 with Celestion G12M Greenback speakers Why two mics? There’s an Austrian Audio OC18 and an AKG D190e. I recorded them both and mixed them to taste. (Mick here, hello). There’s also a goodly dose of stereo room mics in the mix - 2 x AKG C414XL. Why no FX loop discussion for the 1987x? You can’t use the FX loop when using the Headbone VT What is that blue guitar at the end? A lovely chap called Dean Cutler came to a TPS Experience Day recently and brought a couple of his builds. We asked if he would leave one with us. His business is Cutler Custom Guitars, although there’s no formal website yet. Enjoy the show! I thought I’d share my thoughts on the classic Marshall “Plexi” tone. I designed the Bigfoot Thunder Pup pedal to help you get closer to those wonderful guitar sounds! 🤍 If you’d like to know more about the technical wizardry behind guitar tones, please take a look at my book ‘Electrickery’ 🤍
